Let's talk writing:
I was around 41k during the last Wednesday Weekly. I am now at 62,190 words for The Goddess of Vengeance Wore Pink Galoshes.
Yeah. So, it's been great, and I'm not trying to backtalk my muse or anything, but I could not write like this constantly. I am not complaining - it's exciting to watch the novel shape up quickly. But there were unplanned side effects. Like, trouble sleeping - I would find myself getting up after midnight because I had an idea I just had to write down. My alarm goes off at 5:30 for the gym, people. I am meant to go to bed at the same time as kindergartners.
I wrote for I think 7 or 8 hours a day each on Saturday and Sunday (as if it were my day job, strangely enough). Sunday night I wrote through dinner, and found myself really quite unwell - sort of woozy and hungover. Booya, me. I turned the simple act of typing on my laptop into some unhealthy and obsessive.
But the novel is coming together quickly, and I believe that it might not be crap. I'm never sure when I'm writing.
Lauren's quotable quote of the week: "Being a good person is much less demanding than being a good girl, as it turns out."
Let's talk books:
I finished two more novels this week:
Normal Girl by Molly Jong-Fast was a surprisingly light and quick read about addiction (but the stylishly disgusting addictions of the rich, not the more pedestrian addictions of - oh, no. They look pretty much the same, as indicated in Jong-Fast's quick romp from sniffing cocaine off expensive suede boots through rehab).
And, in a completely different genre, Jack Absolute by C.C. Humphreys. This was some fantastic historical fiction - well-researched and never dull for a moment, as Jack Absolute fights for the British in the American Revolution, falls in love and duels with both lovesick lunatics and the Illuminati. If you like historical fiction or are just looking to read an excellent piece of work outside your genres - highly recommended.
Currently still in progress are Lev Grossman's The Magicians, which is amazing so far - a coming-of-age take off on fantasy, and Jessica Page Morrell's book on why writing is rejected, Thanks, But This Isn't for Us. More on this later.
In other news, work is terribly busy and I miss my cats. I fly back home on the 2nd... counting down the days!
Let's talk everything.
How's everyone doing this week? Where are you with your various projects? Whatcha reading?

I know the feeling of feeling oh so woozy after so much writing. I think it's from looking at the screen so much. And doing 16 hours in a weekend, exhausting and fantastic! A few months ago I got out 10,000 words in a weekend and I was so exhausted and proud at the same time. Well done!
Wow, awesome progress! I'm right to 52k and feeling pretty good about that. :-)
You've made great progress with your writing!
I read Normal Girl. I liked it, but I wanted it to be more detailed and longer since there were so many interesting stories that had great potential to be juicier.
Oh wow!!! Well done you!!!! But please take care and take frequent short breaks from the laptop screen - I sound like your spinster auntie - LOL!! But seriously!! Yay for you!!!!!!!!
And of course it's not crap - you're heart and soul are in this novel so it's gonna be amazing!!
Take care
x
Wow, wow, wow. Go!you! That's a pretty impressive word count. I got about 18k out last week on my blog hiatus and felt pretty good about that, so I totally get how great it is when the words flow. :)
Kathryn, I think that's it - that, and mostly consuming sugar & caffeine rather than a balanced meal. lol. It reminded me of when I'd watch movies and eat junk food as a kid until I felt terrible (Good times, though... I should do that again. lol). 10,000 words in a weekend is awesome! Have you done a NaNoWriMo?
Summer, congrats on 52k! Your novel is flying along!
Medeia, it was definitely a short book! I would have been interested in learning more about some of those characters, too.
Aw, thanks Old Kitty! And you are right... I'll try to step away from the computer now and then. lol.
Thanks Sarahjayne! Wow, 18k in a week... it's too bad we can't write this much all the time (even though I didn't enjoy the side effects, lol). Imagine how prolific we'd be?
Of course, I really need to learn how to REVISE quickly...
You are a MANIAC! It's a good thing there are no prizes attached to the Summer Writing Challenge cuz you would so win.
I haven't felt the burn like that in a long time. Once I did 10k in a day but that was when I had a babysitter. Not like that anymore. I guess I better get a move-on.
Good for you for spending so much time on your writing! 7 or 8 hours in one day, wow. I just finished reading Allison Winn Scotch's The One That I Want, which I won in fellow blogger Rebecca (Virgin Novelist)'s contest. It's good; you should read it.
Piedmont, on the babysitter note - I feel like I need to write like the wind now and work hard to establish myself, if possible, pre-kids. Because I feel like I have a lot more time to dedicate to writing now than I will when I have kids that become top priority! Of course it can be done, but pre-kids, it has to be easier. I really admire you moms who make writing happen too. :)
Neurotic, thanks! Appreciate the book rec - I will definitely check that out. I just won "A Bad Day For Pretty" from the Blood Red Pencil, and I'm really looking forward to reading that one too! so many good books, so little time.
Please feel free to use Shel's quote on your blog. I love it too!
